Days 21-30: 1961 and 2011 teams on the upswing, sluggers Colavito and Greenberg heating up as well

Two team went 8-2 this block of games, the 1961 Tigers and the 2011 Tigers.  The 1961 squad was led by slugging outfielder Rocky Colavito, who 14 for 37, .378 average, 3 HRs, 12 RBIs and 10 walks.  The Rock was narrowly our Player of The Block, barely edging 1934 Hank Greenberg (.357, 4 HRs, 12 RBIs) and 2013 Rick Porcello (2-0, 0.00 ERA over 12 innings).

Al Kaline, Norm Cash, and
Rocky Colavito form a fearsome
middle of the lineup for the 1961 team

The 2011 team celebrates wildly going 8-2 lately.
Nice vertical for SS Ramon Santiago in the middle
Justin Verlander (1-0, 13 IP, 0.69, 24 K's) and catcher Alex Avila (.400, 14 for 35, 3 HRs, 14 RBIs) led the 2011 team through a great stretch of success.  Not everyone was en fuego though.  1940 outfielder Bruce Campbell is just 1 for 28 lately (.036), 1993 Cecil Fielder is just 5 for 41 (.122 average, 0 HRs), and 12006 Nate Robertson was lit up (0-2, 8 IP, 20 hits, 11 earned runs).

The hottest teams, however, are not the top teams for the year though.  We see the 1984 continue to hold off the 2013 team for the lead in the Navin Division, the 1909 team has leapt to the top of the Briggs Division, 1935 and 1950 tied atop the Ilitch, and 1915, 1924, and 1968 all tied atop the Fetzer.

1911 Ty Cobb (.431) and 1961 Al Kaline (.421) continue to lead in the Batting Average chase.  1987 Darrell Evans and 2013 Miguel Cabrera are tied for the home run lead with 12, and 1935 Charlie 'The Mechanical Man" Gehringer leads in RBIs with 34.  Three old-time pitchers are tied atop the Wins category, as 1950 Art Houtemann, 1935 Tommy Bridges, and 1961 Jim Bunning all have 6 wins so far. 2011 Justin Verlander has risen (or dropped?) to the top of the ERA race, with a low 1.28 ERA>  1915 Ty Cobb is running away (pun intended) with stolen bases with 40, more than double of the second place person, 1909 Ty Cobb.  And just for good measure, 1911 Ty Cobb is third!)  Couple of surprises from 21st Century players as Rajai Davis is currently riding a 21 game hit streak, and the Roller Coaster himself, Todd Jones, leads all with 10 saves!

Todd Jones doesn't want to hear the hype just yet!
Day 21  2011 Justin Verlander put up 12 K's in a win against 1911. 1984 Darrell Evans clubs two homers.  Three shutouts this day, from 1984 Jack Morris, 1987 Walt Terrell, and 1973 Mickey Lolich. Game of the Day featured 1934 winning on a Goose Goslin walk-off squeeze play!

Day 22  2006 team won a 16 inning marathon against the 1973 team! 2006 finally pulled it off with a Carlos Guillen HR, Chris Shelton singe, and Marcus Thames triple in the top of the 16th.   2011 Alex Avila had 4 hits and 6 RBIs in a 17-2 thrashing of 1911.  1924's Lu Blue had 4 hits, as did 1950 Vic Wertz.

Day 23  Great name from the past, 1984 Barbaro Garbey  had 4 hits in a 7-1 win over 1907.  2013 V-mart went yard twice in a 10-5 win over 1973.  1934 General Crowder pitched his way to 4-0 with a big win over 2014.  1946 team rolled up 15 runs and 21 hits on 1987's Frank Tanana.

Day 24  2013 Anibal Sanchez shutout 1908, with Victor Martinez collecting three hits.  1935 got late game heroics from Pete Fox, whose walk-off hit lifted them to victory.  2014 Phil Coke got his first win when Nick Castellanos brought home Rajai Davis with a  walk-off!  1973 got home runs from light hitters Mickey Stanley and Dick Sharon in their victory over 1909.

Day 25  Deadball style baseball rules Hughie Jennings knocks in Ty Cobb with the game winner over 1924.  The Great Yankee Killer, 1961 Frank Lary, shutout the 1944 team on just 3 hits. 2014 Nick Castellanos continued his hot streak with 2 HRs and 5 RBIs.  It was a great night for Schoolboy Rowe, whose 1935 version went to 5-1 and whose 1934 version struck out 13 1911 batters!

Day 26  1950 beat 1993 8-7, and each team collected 17 hits (Neil Barry had 4 for 1950, Scott Livingstone (I presume) had 5 hits for 1993.  2012 won 4-3 over 1915 when pitcher Pug Cavet wild-pitched in the winning run.  1961 Jim Bunning moved to 5-0 with a whitewashing of 1944.  Rocky Colavito's HR was the only run in that contest.

Day 27  1909 Wahoo Sam Crawford joined the 4 Hit club in a 9-3 win over 1944.  1950 Charlie "King Kong" Keller had 2 HRs to top the 2012 team.  1993 David Wells hurled a three-hit shutout.   1968 scored 7 runs in the top of the 9th to take a 9-4 win over 1961.  2013 Max Scherzer defeated 2011 Max Scherzer 5-0  :-)

Day 28  2012 Andy Dirks racked up four hits in a 7-1 win over 1950.  1924's Heinie Manush hit a grand slam to send the 1987 team to defeat.  1915 Sam Crawford stroked 4 hits.  1907 outfield Davy Jones (NOT the lead singer of the Monkees) was the hero with a walkoff hit against 1908.

Day 29  1884 Juan Berenguer moved to 5-0 on the year durng a 5-2 win over 1935.  1993 got a 2-1 win over 1940 with unlikely heroes Danny Bautista and Joe Boever leading the way.  1950 Art Houtteman is now 6-2 after 11-2 win over 2012, and is looking like a sleeper candidate for Cy Young.  2006 Brandon Inge had three hits, including a home run, in a 7-3 win over 1934.

Day 30  Big day for 2011 Miguel Cabrera, as he gets 4 hits and 5 RBIs!  1924 Hooks Dauss got his 4th win of the year, 12-2 over 1973.  1924 Ty Cobb collected 4 hits and 4 RBIs.  1908's Matty McIntyre continued his pesky hitting ways, with 4 hits in a 7-5 win over 1993.  2013 pitchers Rick Porcello, Drew Smyly, and Joacquin Benoit combined on a one-htter against 1984!
