Days 31-40: 1924 team knocks 1968 off of the top of the Navin Division!

Fred's 1924 team raced off to an 8-2 record this set, claiming first place in the Fetzer.  Harry Heilmann (.349, 8 HRs, 35 RBIs), an old Ty Cobb (.299, 29 runs), and Earl Whitehill (7-3, 3.19 ERA) have helped this team overachieve thus far.

The 1924 Tigers, looking warm in those snazzy sweaters

Some other races are heating up as well.  2014 and 1984 are now tied for the Navin Division lead.  1950 is in control of the Ilitch for now after an 8-2 run of their own, with 1935 still in striking distance.  The 1909 team is running away with the Briggs Division at the 1/4 point of the season!

Lots of interesting numbers in the races for individual glory (the newspaper style recap report is my favorite to see those, check it out if you haven't already!  Three players are hitting over .400 - 1911 Ty Cobb (.427), 2013 Jhonny Peralta (.404), and 1961 Al Kaline (.403).  2013 Miguel Cabrera, 1987 Darrel Evans, 2006 Marcus Thames, and 1934 Hank Greenberg are tied for the home run lead with 13 each.  2013 Rick Porcello is leading all hurlers with a 2.14 ERA, and 1946 Hal Newhouse leads all in K's with 74.

2014 Torii Hunter got a league-record SIX hits in a game vs 1940.  2012 Austin Jackson set another record, striking out all 5 at bats in a recent game against the 2011 team.  1934 Eldon Auker set a new mark for lowest hits allowed, only giving up 1 hit to the 1935 team.  1934 Tommy Bridges set a new record with 14 strikeouts in one game.

1909 Ed Summers is the early leader
for the Cy Young Award - see more about
Kickapoo Ed in this article!

Saw some great individual performances over this stretch of games. 2006 Marcus Thames got hot again (.400, 5 HRs), 1993 Cecil Fielder clubbed 4 HRs, 1908 Wahoo Sam Crawford hit .432, and1909 starter Ed Summers picked up 3 wins.  However, we will give the Player of the Block Award to 2013 Max Scherzer, who pitched 18 innings, only allowing 8 hits, 1 run, and striking out 16!

2013 Mad Max Scherzer is #1 for this set of games!

Day 31 Crazy game as 1984 scored NINE runs in the top of the 14th to break open what was an even game with 2013.   2012 Brennan Boesch popped a three run homer to help beat 2011.  Now an NL All Star in real life, 2014 Eugenio Suarez had four hits against 1946 Virgil Trucks.  1961 won their 7th in a row, edging 1940 6-5.  "Big Daddy" Cecil Fielder had 4 hits, including a home run, and 3 RBIs to lead 1993 over 1908.

Day 32  1940 ended the long winning streak for 1961, as Johnny Gorsica outdueled Paul Foytack.  1950 Jerry Priddy's walk-off HR topped 1945.  2006 Magglio Ordonez and 1973 Al Kaline each collected 4 hits.  Big news today was 2013 Don Kelly (the working man's ballplayer!) belting his first two homers of the season in a 4-0 win over 1984.  Milt Wilcox surrendered the homers and took the loss.  Max Scherzer shut them out for the win.

Day 33  1973 Joe Coleman blanked the 1907 team on just two hits.  2014 J.D. Martinez went yard twice and Miguel Cabrera hit a walk-off to defeat the 1993 team.  Good day for catchers as 2011 Alex Avila and1968 Bill Freehan both had multiple hits to lead their teams to victory.

Day 34 Curious to see who will throw the first no-hitter of the season, it seems inevitable with this many teams.  1934 Eldon Auker came very close, giving up his only hit in the 8th inning of a shutout of the 1935 team.  Walkoff city tonight, as 1915 Heinie Manush, 1946 Roy Cullenbine, 1940 Barney McCoskey, and 1950 Jerry Priddy all had walk-off hits.  1945 starter Dizzy Trout is making a bid for the Biggest Underachiever award, dropping to 0-9 with an 8.74 ERA despite pretty good real-life stats (18-15, 3.14)

Day 35 Huge day for 1909 SS Donie Bush, whose 4 hits and 7 RBIs paced a 14-1 thrashing of 1944.  1961 Rocky Colavito blasted his 8th and 9th homers.  1924 edged 1915 7-6, giving SP Lil Stoner his 3rd win of the year, and Hooks Dauss earned his 2nd save.  1993 staged a big comeback to top 2014, rallying for three runs in the top of the 9th to win 6-4.  Bill Gullickson got the win, and Tony Phillips and Cecil Fielder both homered.

Day 36  1968 CF Mickey Stanley, known more for defense than slugging, hit a  two-run walk-off HR to beat 1911.  1934 Tommy Bridges shut out 2006 on six hits.  1950 won their seventh in a row.  1984 Milt Wilcox tosses a shutout and Darrell Evans homered twice in a 5-0 win over 2012.  The 2014 Martinez Brothers (Victor and J.D.) each homered off of Frank Tanana to pace 2014 over 1987.  1915 got a three-run HR from Sam Crawford in the top of the 9th and held off 1961.  1984 got a combined shutout from Milt Wilcox and Willie Hernandez.  1973 Al Kaline racked up five hits and is hitting .338 at the age of 38!

Day 37  2006 Neifi Perez had 4 hits and 3 RBIs in a win over 1934  2013 finally snapped 1950's win streak, with Anibal Sanchez moving to 5-1 on the year.  1911 Ty Cobb had 3 hits.  1909 George Mullin went to 7-2 with a win over 1908.  1946 Jimmy Outlaw had 5 hits in a 14-4 thrashing of 1940.  Two more homers for the Rock, 1961 Rocky Colavito, who now has 11 dingers.

Day 38  2006 Nate Robertson blanked 1934, and Omar Infante added two triples.  1911 George Mullin had his own shutout.  1935 Tommy Bridges had a new record of 14 strikeouts of the 2011 team.  Jo-Jo White knocked in Flea Clifton in one of the best sets of walk-off participant names ever!

Day 39  1987 Jack Morris threw a shut-out and Mike Heath led the offense with 4 hits.  1908 Wild Bill Donavan outdueled 1946 Virgil Trucks in a 5-1 game.  1934 reliever Chief Hogsett got his first win in an entertaining 9-8 game.  1961 DH Charlie "Paw Paw" Maxwell had three hits and Jim Bunning is now 7-0 for the year!

Day 40 The Torrid One, 2014 Torii Hunter, got 6 hits in a game to set a new league record.  His 2014 team crushed 1940 18-9.  1907 routed 1987 16-3.  2006 Brennan Boesch hit two dingers, as did 1968 Mickey Stanley.  In the game of the night, 1908 and 1946 were tied after nine, and things looked bleak for the 1946 team when 1908 scored three times in the top of the 10th.  However they got a rare walk-off Grand Slam from infielder Jimmy Bloodworth to win 12-11!!!
